Ranji Trophy 2022 8 state Associations Request to BCCI Against Cancellation of Ranji Trophy

Ranji Trophy 2022: Several state associations have requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to consider holding the Ranji Trophy season.

This is the second straight year that the Ranji Trophy’s fate is uncertain. The pandemic has had a big impact on the domestic season especially.

Seven members of the Bengal team tested positive for the dreadful virus at the start of the year.

Mumbai all-rounder Shivam Dube and team video analyst Ganesh Tyagi contacted COVID-19 ahead of the season.

“BCCI does not want to compromise the safety of the players, support staff, match officials and other participants involved and hence. BCCI has decided to put the three tournaments on hold till further notice. The BCCI will continue to assess the situation and take a call on the start of the tournaments accordingly,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah had issued a statement on January 4.

“BCCI thanks and continues to appreciate the efforts of the healthcare workers, state associations, players, support staff, match officials. All the service providers who put their best foot forward to host more than 700 matches across 11 tournaments in the current 2021-22 domestic season,” Shah further added in his statement.

As per the report, the full season of the Ranji Trophy needs a window of 75 days. It looks next to impossible given the number of days remaining and taking quarantine requirements into consideration. However, the state bodies have even requested for just group stages to take place keeping the shrinking window in mind. But that too will take a period of 39 days to be held properly.

Even if BCCI is looking to complete the group stage. It is expected to take 39 days including the quarantines and bio bubbles which might not be ideal at the moment.

The tournament has to start by February in that case if it has to fit inside the window before the IPL starts and any time later is going to rule out the opportunity.

Currently, the BCCI has the entire February and the first two weeks of March if they think of conducting at least the group stages.

Ranji Trophy was last year scrapped by the BCCI. Even though the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20) and Vijay Hazare Trophy (ODI) have completed two seasons since the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the world.
