The Decision to drop Prithvi Shaw on basis of one Test: Ashish Nehra

Indian young talented palyer Prithvi Shaw struggled for form in a couple of series and found himself out of sort soon.

After hitting peak form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 for Delhi Capitals, many reckoned if the youngster could be considered for selection for India’s 4-month long tour of England but that wasn’t to be.

“As far as technique is concerned, for any player it is difficult to adjust. Even during the Adelaide Test, he wasn’t a player who had a lot of experience or played 30-40 Test matches. We were talking about a youngster. To drop him on the basis of one Test match was tough,” Nehra told Cricbuzz.

Shaw endured a difficult time in Australia. He was dismissed for scores of 0 and 4 in the first Test at the Adelaide Oval.

He didn’t feature in any of the following matches of the series and wasn’t selected for the home assignment against England too.

Having not played a single red-ball cricket game since then, Shaw didn’t have the opportunity to prove his form in the whites and hence couldn’t be considered for selection.

Since returning from Australia, Shaw has worked hard on his batting and proved his abilities in the Vijay Hazare Trophy before stunning the cricketing world with his heroics for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021.

While this season Shaw was virtually undroppable in the IPL, he remained in and out of the DC team last season. As per Nehra, Shaw deserved to play more games for Delhi, especially above Ajinkya Rahane.

“It’s one thing that India went on to win the series but even then, I felt that he shouldn’t have been benched after one Test match. Even during last year’s IPL, I felt he shouldn’t have been dropped.

He played a few good innings but couldn’t score runs. But I will always back a player who has more runs than Rahane, when you talk of T20 cricket. I’m not saying that Rahane is not a good player, but in T20 cricket you need explosive players like Shaw, Pant, Stoinis and Hetmyer,” Nehra asserted.

With India’s Test assignments limited this year, it seems like Shaw would have to wait for another opportunity to prove his credentials in the longest format of the game.
