Rohit Sharma backs BCCI’s move to postpone IPL 2021: I think it’s a very good decision

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma agreed with the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to suspend the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 amid of coronavirus in India.

The Indian cricket board took the call after two more players tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday, taking the overall tally to 4 during the tournament.

Only 29 games were played in the 60-match tournament till May 3. IPL 2021 was scheduled to be played until May 30.

Wriddhiman Saha (Sunrisers Hyderabad), Amit Mishra (Delhi Capitals), Varun Chakravarthy (Kolkata Knight Riders) and Sandeep Warrier (KKR) tested positive for Covid-19 within 24 hours of each other this week. Laxmipatyh Balaji and Michael Hussey, Chennai Super Kings bowling and batting coaches respectively, also contracted the virus along with a bus cleaner.

The growing list of Covid-positive cases in the tournament forced the BCCI to suspend the IPL 2021 with immediate effect.

Board vice-president Rajeev Shukla later affirmed that they will do everything possible to hold the remainder of the tournament after the Covid crisis ends or is at least brought under control by the Indian government and healthcare industry.

India on Thursday recorded a new high of 4,12,262 new Covid cases and 3,980 deaths, taking the country’s tally to 2,10,77,410, according to the Union Health Ministry.

As many as 3,29,113 discharges have been made in the last 24 hours taking the total number of recovered cases in the country to 1,72,80,844.

The active case stands at 35,66,398. The country at present has a death toll of 23,01,68.
